BLAKEHAUS GALLERY POP UP AT JOHN LAUTNER’S SALKIN HOUSE
This fall, BLAKEHAUS, curated by Peter Blake, brings minimalist art and modern design into powerful conversation with architectural history. Running from October 2 through November 2, this installation unfolds within one of Los Angeles’ most architecturally significant private residences — the Salkin House, designed by John Lautner in 1948 — creating an immersive dialogue between art, architecture, and modernism.
A Dialogue Between Art and Architecture
Curated by Peter Blake, founder of the acclaimed Peter Blake Gallery in Laguna Beach, BLAKEHAUS is conceived as a living installation — a dialogue between structure and space, material and meaning. Integrating contemporary minimalism with Lautner’s visionary design, this edition transforms the Salkin House into both a contemplative environment and an evolving work of art. Each placement, form, and line feels deliberate — honoring the home’s history while exploring new ways to experience art within architecture.
The Salkin House: A Hidden Lautner Masterpiece
Designed in 1948 for Jules Salkin, the home reflects Lautner’s ability to merge Bauhaus principles and the International Style with the relaxed informality of Southern California living. Modest in scale yet architecturally ambitious, the Salkin House captures the experimental spirit that defined mid-century modernism.
After changing hands in 1949, the property quietly remained with the Maxwell family for decades — so much so that even dedicated Lautner scholars were unaware it had ever been built. Early sketches circulated in archives, but the home itself remained largely hidden until its rediscovery in 2014.
A Testament to Preservation and Renewal
In 2015, the residence was purchased and meticulously restored by Trina Turk and Jonathan Skow, in collaboration with Bestor Architecture. Their restoration balanced historical authenticity with contemporary livability, earning the Los Angeles Conservancy Preservation Award in 2018. Today, the Salkin House stands as a model of preservation — modest in footprint yet rich in cultural and architectural importance.
Where Past and Present Converge
At the intersection of art, architecture, and design, BLAKEHAUS | SALKIN HOUSE underscores Los Angeles’ enduring role as a hub for creative innovation. This site-specific exhibition transforms a mid-century treasure into a living gallery — where art and architecture exist in perfect harmony.
